What is SINGLE PARENT? What does SINGLE PARENT mean? SINGLE PARENT meaning, definition & explanation

02:32
What is SINGLE PARENT? What does SINGLE PARENT mean? SINGLE PARENT meaning, definition & explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A single parent is an uncoupled individual who shoulders most or all of the day-to-day responsibilities for raising a child or children. A mother is more often the primary caregiver in a single-parent family structure that has arisen due to death of the partner, divorce or unplanned pregnancy. Historically, death of a partner was a major cause of single parenting. Single parenting can also result from the breakup or divorce of coupled parents. Custody battles, awarded by the court or rationalized in other terms, determine who the child will spend majority of their time with. In western society in general, following the separation of a heterosexual couple, a child is placed with the primary caregiver, usually the mother, while the secondary caregiver is usually the father., though the reverse does happen and joint custody is on the rise. Recent years have seen the increasing incidence and visibility of uncoupled women who choose to be single parents. When single women seek to get pregnant intentionally in order to become single mothers by choice (or "choice moms"), they often seek an anonymous or known sperm donor. Single parent adoption or fostering is also sometimes an option for single adults who want to raise a family. The demographics of single parenting show a general increase worldwide in children living in single parent homes. Although divorce is one of the main events that leads to single parenting, it may be that the majority of cases in the US are from pregnancy outside of wedlock. Single parenting has become a norm in the United States and is a trend found in multiple other countries. The morality and advisability of single motherhood has long been debated in the US. Single American mothers live in poverty 5 times more often than married parents.(National Women’s Law Center, Poverty & Income Among Women & Families, 2000-2013 )the topic is less contentious in Western European countries where all families enjoy more robust state-sponsored social benefits.

The Truth About Single Moms

01:14:16
Single Mothers are talked about in glowing terms for their hard-work, determination and fortitude - but what is the truth about single moms? Motherhood has evolved quite a bit over the last fifty years: more women are having their children later in life - or in less traditional ways: before and outside marriage. Single motherhood has become so incredibly common that it is projected that soon - half of all children will live with a single mom at some point before the age of eighteen. What kind of impact does single motherhood have on society? What impact does single motherhood have on children? Are Fathers important - and what impact does growing up in a fatherless home have? Ann Coulter On Single Mothers - Cites Statistics That Piss People Off

03:10
Ann Coulter talks about single mothers on Father Albert's show "Hot Under The Collar." From Ann Coulter's book- Guilty: Liberal “Victims” and Their Assault on America entitled, “Victim of a crime? Thank a Single Mother. “Of all single mothers in America, only 6.5 percent of them are widows, 37.8 percent are divorced, and 41.3 percent gave birth out of wedlock. The 6.5 percent of single mothers whose husbands have died shouldn’t be called ‘single mothers’ at all. We already have a word for them: ‘widows.’ Their children do just fine compared with the children of married parents.” — P.35 “Here is the lottery ticket that single mothers are handing their innocent children by choosing to raise them without fathers: Controlling for socioeconomic status, race, and place of residence, the strongest predictor of whether a person will end up in prison is that he was raised by a single parent. By 1996, 70 percent of inmates in state juvenile detention centers serving long-term sentences were raised by single mothers. Seventy-two percent of juvenile murderers and 60 percent of rapists come from single-mother homes. Seventy percent of teenage births, dropouts, suicides, runaways, juvenile delinquents, and child murderers involve children raised by single mothers. Girls raised without fathers are more sexually promiscuous and more likely to end up divorced. A 1990 study by the Progressive Policy Institute showed that after controlling for single motherhood, the difference between black and white crime rates disappeared. Various studies have come up with slightly different numbers, but all the figures are grim. According to the Index of Leading Cultural Indicators, children from single-parent families account for 63 percent of all youth suicides, 70 percent of all teenage pregnancies, 71 percent of all adolescent chemical/substance abuse, 80 percent of all prison inmates, and 90 percent of all homeless and runaway children. A study cited in the Village Voice produced similar numbers. It found that children brought up in single-mother homes ‘are five times more likely to commit suicide, nine times more likely to drop out of high school, 10 times more likely to abuse chemical substances, 14 times more likely to commit rape (for the boys), 20 times more likely to end up in prison, and 32 times more likely to run away from home.’ Single motherhood is like a farm team for future criminals and social outcasts. ….Many of these studies, for example, are from the 1990s, when the percentage of teenagers raised by single parents was lower than it is today. In 1990, 28 percent of children under eighteen were being raised in one-parent homes (mother or father), and 71 percent were being raised in two-parent homes. By 2005, more than one-third of all babies born in the United States were illegitimate. That’s a lot of social problems coming. …Imagine an America with 70 percent fewer juvenile delinquents, 70 percent fewer teenage births, 63 to 70 percent fewer teenage suicides, and 70 percent to 90 percent fewer runaways and you will appreciate what the sainted single mothers have accomplished.” — P.37-38 “But Americans used to be able to care about the circumstances of their children’s births: The illegitimacy rate has gone up by more than 300 percent since 1970. Moreover, even assuming that, sometime around the year of 1969, the entire human race lost the ability to defer gratification, there’s still the wholly volitional decision not to give the baby up for adoption. You will note that we do not read about adopted children filling up the prisons, welfare rolls, and runaway shelters. Adopted children are no worse off — and, indeed, are generally better off — than nonadopted children.” — P.43 “A 2008 study led by Georgia State University economist Benjamin Scafidi found that single mothers — unwed or divorced — cost the US taxpayer $112 billion every year.” — P.51 “According to the US Justice Department crime statistics, domestic abuse is virtually nonexistent for married women living with their husbands. From 1993 to 2005, the number of married women victimized by their husbands ranged from 0.9 to 3.2 per 1000. Domestic violence was about 40 times more likely among divorced or separated women, ranging from 37.7 to 118.5 per 1000. Even never married women were more than twice as likely to be victims of domestic violence as married women.” — P.57-58

The American single mother's burden- Inside Story Americas

25:01
The American single mother's burden- Inside Story Americas Unmarried mothers are now the new normal among young women in the United States. According to a Census Bureau report out this month, six out of every 10 women who give birth in their early 20's are unmarried. The report also found that - across all ages - single motherhood has increased 80 percent since 1980. So, why is the US such a difficult place for single mothers compared to other similarly industrialised nations? To discuss this, Inside Story Americas with presenter Kimberly Halkett is joined by Laurie Maldonado, co-author of the report Worst Off: Single-Parent Families in the United States; Sarah Jane Glynn, a sociologist and Associate Director of the Women's Economic Policy program at Center for American Progress; and Philip Cohen, a sociology professor at University of Maryland, who also runs a blog called Family Inequality. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.' Ron Haskins: Poverty Dramatically Higher in Single-Parent Families

02:25
Ron Haskins: There are vast differences in poverty rates among children who live with their married parents and those who live in a female-headed family. The increasing number of single-parent families is one of the key reasons we have had such difficulty fighting poverty. On September 12, the day the Census poverty report is released, the Center on Children and Families at Brookings held its tenth annual briefing to discuss the new figures on poverty and income and their implications for families and policymakers. Two keynote speakers and a panel of experts offered their analysis on the Census report and perspectives on the significance of the new data. More on this event at: http://goo.gl/UmO9B

Fuel Poverty in Glasgow - giving single parents a voice

08:49
One Parent Families Scotland aims to challenge the myths about lone parents and their children. A quarter of all families in Scotland are headed by a lone parent. One-parent-families are three times more likely than two-parent-families to experience poverty. 1 in 4 families skip a meal to meet fuel costs. Some mums go without food to make sure that their children are fed. The stress of money problems caused by high fuel bills puts added pressure on family life. With support from OPFS, single parents in Glasgow can visit their local hub, meet with other parents to share their experiences with each other, as well as getting support, information and advice to take control of their lives. Welfare Reform means single parents will lose 10% of their income through: Cuts to income support. Cuts to child benefit. Cuts to help with childcare. Cuts to housing benefit (bedroom tax). Cuts to JSA if claimants don't comply with work requirements. Child poverty will be increased. Communities will be damaged. Lone parents deserve to be celebrated for their dedication, commitment and courage. OPFS energy awareness packs can be downloaded from http://opfs.org.uk (Video produced by Thunder Grey for OPFS)

SINGLE PARENTING PART 1 (A Single Mother’s Tale)

15:47
Over the past 20 years single-parent families have become even more common than the so-called "nuclear family" consisting of a mother, father and children. Today we see all sorts of single parent families: headed by mothers, headed by fathers, headed by a grandparent raising their grandchildren. There is a cultural bias against single parenthood and the host of negative connotations that come to bear, all of which single parents are forced to deal with daily, through micro-aggressions. This week we meet a single mom who takes us on a journey of life as a single parent. Let’s trash this topic even more in the comments section below 👇🏾👇🏾....🙌🏾🙌🏾

Which poses a bigger threat to black communities: Racism? Or the absence of fathers? Drawing on a sea of official data and his own upbringing, talk-show host Larry Elder shows just how important black fathers are in turning boys into responsible and happy men--and how their absence has had a tragic impact on millions of black Americans. That children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine times more likely to drop out of school and 20 times more likely to end up in prison.” The Journal of Research on Adolescence confirms that even after controlling for varying levels of household income, kids in father-absent homes are more likely to end up in jail. And kids who never had a father in the house are the most likely to wind up behind bars. In 1960, 5 percent of America's children entered the world without a mother and father married to each other. By 1980 it was 18 percent, by 2000 it had risen to 33 percent, and fifteen years later, the number reached 41 percent. For blacks, even during slavery when marriage for slaves was illegal, black children were more likely than today to be raised by both their mother and father. Economist Walter Williams has written that, according to census data, from 1890 to 1940, a black child was more likely to grow up with married parents than a white child. For blacks, out-of-wedlock births have gone from 25 percent in 1965 to 73 percent in 2015. For whites, from less than 5 percent to over 25 percent. And for Hispanics, out-of-wedlock births have risen to 53 percent. What happened to fathers? The answer is found in a basic law of economics: If you subsidize undesirable behavior you will get more undesirable behavior. In 1949, the nation’s poverty rate was 34 percent. By 1965, it was cut in half, to 17 percent -- all before President Lyndon Johnson’s so-called War on Poverty. But after that war began in 1965, poverty began to flat line. From 1965 until now, the government has spent over $20 trillion to fight poverty. The poverty rate has remained unchanged, but the relationship between poor men and women has changed – dramatically. That’s because our generous welfare system allows women, in effect, to marry the government. And this makes it all too easy for men to abandon their traditional moral and financial responsibilities. Psychologists call such dependency "learned helplessness." How do we know that the welfare state creates disincentives that hurt the very people we are trying to help? They tell us. In 1985, the Los Angeles Times asked both the poor and the non-poor whether poor women "often" have children to get additional benefits. Most of the non-poor respondents said no. However, 64 percent of poor respondents said yes. Now, who do you think is in a better position to know? Tupac Shakur, the late rapper, once said: "I know for a fact that had I had a father, I'd have some discipline. I'd have more confidence." He admitted he began running with gangs because he wanted the things a father gives to a child, especially to a boy: structure and protection. “Your mother cannot calm you down the way a man can,” Shakur said. “You need a man to teach you how to be a man." Gifts For Moms is a nonprofit organization that works to inspire, empower and equip single parents to create better lives for their children. Our mission is to help single mothers out of the tight spots with no strings attached. Sometimes mothers just need someone to talk to or help with finding resources for her family. The numbers tell the story of single mothers in the United States. According to Families and Living Arrangements: 2006, there were 12.9 million one-parent families in 2006 — 10.4 million single-mother families (81%) and 2.5 million single-father families (19%). About 84% of single parents are mothers. Women earn on average 77 cents to the white male dollar, African American women earn just 66 cents to the male dollar, and Latino women earn just 54 cents. Women with children earn 10 to15 percent less than women without children. 37% of single mothers and their families live in poverty, and the number rises to 44% for African American women. There is another story that the numbers can't tell. It is the story of constant stress, struggle and living on the edge of financial disaster while trying to raise healthy and productive children. For many of these women life is a constant juggling act - juggling bills, time and attention. Can any of us truly imagine the terror of living in constant fear of being homeless, letting our children down, or having the bottom fall out of our lives with no one to help us? This is a daily reality for thousands of women. Gift For Moms Project wants to be the unconditional safety net that helps empower women to build stronger families.
